Today, laser technology, which reduces the use of glasses and lenses and is used in the treatment of visual defects, is developing considerably. Laser eye surgery technology called Smile Laser (ReLex Smile) is the most developed technique in its field. The Smile Laser technique was first used in 2007. The word “Smile” in the definition actually consists of the initials of the words “Small Incision Lenticular Extraction”. Smile eye surgery is a resolving eye treatment method for patients with astigmatism, myopia and dry eye complaints. Today, the Smile Laser operation stands out as a one-step treatment method without a cover and a blade. In addition, the recovery period of patients who underwent Smile Laser eye operations is quite short. In Smile Laser eye surgery, the treatment is completed with a 2 mm corneal incision after the applied laser, without removing the cornea in any way. With Smile Laser technology, it can be said that today, even patients with astigmatism and short sightedness problems have witnessed a great deal of success. Patients who complain of dry eyes, on the other hand, find a solution to their problems with the Smile Laser method.
In the Smile laser (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) operation method, vision problems known as astigmatism and myopia are treated more safely than the techniques previously used to treat them. There are many conveniences and advantages that the smile laser method provides to Smile patients. Some of these great advantages can be listed as preserving the integrity of the cornea, not making large incisions in the eye and thus not affecting the optic nerves, and minimizing the discomforting complaints such as pain and stinging after the operation. In addition, Smile laser eye surgery is advantageous in terms of its applicability to patients suffering from dry eyes. With smile laser operations, patients can be treated up to -10 in myopia and -5.0 in astigmatism.
In Lasik operations, which have been performed for many years in Turkey, flap preparation is the most sensitive point, and the problems of the flap process have been eliminated with the Smile laser treatment. Problems are corrected by removing a tissue known as the lenticule, located in the inner part of the cornea, through a 2 mm opening. In this way, the corneal nerves, which are affected to a certain extent in other laser methods, are not damaged in the Smile laser treatment technique. After the Smile laser operation, patients experience a very small amount of burning sensation and do not feel dry eyes for weeks after the treatment is performed. Due to this advantage, the Smile laser treatment method makes it possible to perform laser treatment on patients with dry eyes who have not been treated before. Another advantage of the smile laser is that it provides the chance of treatment for patients with thin corneal thickness.
