What is Intraocular Lens?

The word lens used when referring to the intraocular lens should not be confused with contact lenses worn manually. The lens in question is a transparent structure placed inside the eye. Its function is to refract the light coming into the eye and transmit it to the retina and to enable the eye to see objects at all distances.

Multifocal intraocular lenses have different designs, either bi- or trifocal. Intraocular lenses as known as IOLs that provide clear vision without reading glasses at close, medium and far distances are called trifocal intraocular lenses. After the intraocular lens treatment, since implanted iols correct the vision, there is no need for patients to wear glasses anymore. They no longer have trouble reading without glasses, driving a car, or reading the texts on remote signs. Trifocal intraocular lens technology is the most advanced smart lens technology available today. The success achieved at close, medium and long distances has made it a highly preferred technology.

How your eye works?

The images you see are formed by the light reflected from the objects you look at and then entering your eye through your pupil. Along with the lens, the cornea bends (refractions) light and focuses it on the retina at the back of the eye. The retina is covered with millions of light-sensitive cells which are known as rods and cones. Cones are in charge of daytime vision, allowing you to see objects in color and detail. Rods, on the other hand, are responsible for night vision. The retina converts light into electrical signals. These signals travel to your brain via the optic nerve, and your brain processes the signals to form an image.

IOLs Implantation

In previous years, in the treatment processes of cataract patients, the natural lens was removed, and monofocal iols prepared for either near or far distance vision were placed. After the operation, patients had to wear glasses.
Thanks to the developing medical technologies, the production of multifocal iols was carried out successfully and these intraocular lenses started to offer perfect vision from all distances. In this way, intraocular lens implantation has become a well-preferred treatment technique, especially in such eye diseases such as cataracts. This technique is to replace the natural lens in the eye with a prosthetic intraocular lens implanted.

Which Intraocular Lens is Right For You?

Intraocular lens operations can be applied to patients who do not have the appropriate corneal thickness for laser treatment and who have advanced eye disorders. Premium Lenses consist of multifocal, accommodative and multifocal toric types of iols. The lenses to be used are determined as a result of personal evaluations. For example, if you suffer from eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, or macular degeneration, you may not be a suitable candidate for bifocal or trifocal lenses. These diseases may be incompatible with intraocular lens therapy even in the early stages. There is no one intraocular lens that can be called the best for everyone. The important thing here is to choose the lens that suits your specific needs. In fact, your doctor may use two different multifocal lenses or two different types of intraocular lenses together. Just like with prescription glasses, the lenses will be adjusted to your personal needs to give you the best possible vision.

Monofocal (Single Focus Lens)

Lenses that allow us to see only a long distance are called monofocal (single focus) lenses. Smart lenses used in cataract treatment put an end to the need for eyeglasses. In the treatment of cataracts, single-focal monofocals are used as well as trifocal smart lenses.

Trifocal Intraocular Lens

Multifocal contact lenses are contact lenses that contain more than one degree in a single lens. There are degrees for very close objects, one degree for normal objects seen from a distance, and degrees for objects at intermediate distances. Thanks to this mechanism, people with presbyopia can correct the problems of not being able to see near objects clearly due to advanced age.

Multifocal Intraocular Lens

LASIK eye surgery is the well known and quite commonly applied laser eye surgery to correct vision issues. During LASIK eye surgery, a special cutting laser is used to perfectly change the shape of the clear dome-shaped tissue (cornea) in front of the eyes to better the vision.

Trifocal Intraocular Lenses

Lenses that allow us to see far, medium and close distances are called trifocal lenses.

Toric Lens (Astigmatic Lens)

Patients using hard contact lenses should stop using lenses for 3 weeks, and those using soft contact lenses 1 week in advance. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes, not to wear make-up, or even to use perfume on the day of surgery.

What is the Procedure of Laser Eye Surgery?

If the patient has astigmatism in the eye, a toric iols (to correct astigmatism) can be preferred.

Phakic Intraocular Lenses

If the refractive errors such as hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism are too high and it is determined that LASIK treatment will not be sufficient to correct them, or if the corneal thickness, which is one of the conditions required by LASIK treatment, is not sufficient for this treatment, Phakik intraocular lens treatment is among the options to be considered.

Things to do before Intraocular Lens Treatment

The success of the surgery depends on meticulous pre-operative measurements, the correct calculation of the lens number with the calculations of an experienced doctor, and the use of disposable materials in a meticulous and clean hospital. It is recommended making sure that you pay attention to these when making your choices. In the process before laser eye surgery, your suitability for the surgery and which laser type to be applied are determined by your doctor’s detailed examination.

How is Intraocular Lens Operation Performed?

First, the patient is put to sleep with general anesthesia. Therefore, there is no feeling of pain during the procedure. Smart lens surgery is performed with the phacoemulsification method. This method is the aspiration of the natural lens inside the eye with a device with an ultrasonic feature. After the natural lens is removed, new artificial smart intraocular lenses are attached to the patient. People who do not have cataract disease but want to receive intraocular smart lens treatment are generally patients who do not want to wear glasses for the rest of their lives. The operation takes an average of 15 minutes for one eye. takes. Preferably, both eyes are operated on different days, but it can also be done on the same day.

What Should be Considered after Intraocular Lens Treatment?

There is no need to stay in the hospital after the operation. Protective glasses against light should be used. After smart lens applications, patients can return to their normal lives the next day. However, they should definitely pay attention to keeping the eye clean for the first month. It is possible for patients to take a shower 3-4 days after the surgery. It is possible to have complaints of sensitivity to sunlight and glare, and complaints of light scattering in the evening. However, the probability of this happening is very low. This situation is not permanent most of the time, however, it is useful to be careful in the process. In order to follow the process after the operation, regular physician control should be performed.
